What residential proxies are and why websites trust them

Residential proxies are IP addresses from home internet connections. Regular ISPs assign these addresses to apartments and houses, not to datacenters. When you browse through one, a website doesn't see a server. It sees a person with a laptop or phone in the country you picked.

The addresses in the Prokso pool belong to devices of people who agreed to share part of their connection through partner apps. Your request goes through our gateway gw.prokso.com, then through one of those devices, and only then reaches the website. To the site, it's an ordinary visit from a home network.

That's why residential IPs see fewer captchas and blocks. Websites know datacenter IP ranges and often treat them with suspicion. A home address carries no such flag, and blocking it means risking cutting off real visitors. For tasks where IP reputation matters, like data collection and market research, SEO, ad verification, marketplaces and accounts, this is the main reason to go residential.

Rotating IPs vs sticky sessions: which mode to use

Residential proxies work in two modes. Picking the right one decides whether a website notices your address changing in the middle of a session.

Rotating: a new address for every request

Port 823 is HTTP and port 824 is SOCKS5. On both, every new request goes out from a different IP. That works well for data collection: thousands of requests are spread across many addresses, so none of them racks up a suspicious number of hits. In advanced mode you can add a session number to your username, and one address will stick for about 30 minutes even on these ports.

Sticky: one address per port

Ports 10000 through 20000 each hold their own stable address. They work as both HTTP and SOCKS5. You can set the session duration from 1 to 120 minutes; the default is 30. For multiple accounts, use different ports: one port per profile.

Geo-targeting: country, city, ZIP code and ISP

Country targeting comes at no extra cost, and the pool covers 195 countries. For most jobs that's all you need: checking prices in Germany, seeing ads the way people in Poland see them, or running an account from a US IP.

When you need more precision, advanced mode lets you target a region or state, a city, a ZIP code, or a specific ISP by its ASN. You can also target several countries at once or exclude certain countries from the mix. That comes in handy when you check local search results in a particular city or work with a service that ties an account to an ISP.

One thing to keep in mind: our upstream supplier bills precise-geo traffic (region, city, ZIP or ASN) at double the rate. So 1 GB of that traffic takes 2 GB off your plan. We don't add anything on top, but plan for the double usage. If your task doesn't need a city, stick with country targeting and save half the traffic.

Pay per GB: how traffic is counted and why it never expires

Prokso sells residential proxies by traffic volume, not by number of IPs or days. The price is $1.59 per GB, the same for any volume. There's no subscription and no recurring charges. You pay once for the volume you need.

Traffic is counted both ways, covering what you send and what you download. Video, large images and full page loads with ad scripts eat the most. Text requests and API responses weigh very little. As a rough guide, one social media account without video takes about 50–300 MB a month, and one search results page is roughly 0.5–1 MB.

Most importantly, the traffic you buy has no expiration date. If you had less work this month, the balance stays put for your next project. That's especially handy if your workload comes and goes: run a campaign, take a break, come back a few weeks later, and your gigabytes are still there. To avoid overspending, you can set a usage limit per hour, day or week on a plan and turn on email or Telegram alerts for when traffic runs low.

What residential proxies are used for

Data collection and market research

Analysts and data teams collect public information from websites that don't respond well to server addresses: catalogs, listings, competitor product ranges and prices in different countries. A residential IP from the right country shows the same page a local shopper sees, so your data reflects the real market. Rotation spreads requests across many addresses, while a sticky port holds one session when a site requires a login or a cart. The setup is covered on the web scraping proxies page.

SEO and price scraping

Search engines and online stores quickly spot bulk requests from a single address. Rotation on port 823 or 824 spreads the load, and city targeting shows you local results. Check out proxies for SEO and price monitoring. If the source site doesn't fight scrapers, cheaper datacenter addresses may be enough for simple jobs. See proxies for web scraping.

Advertising and ad verification

Ad platforms keep a close eye on login addresses. A residential IP from the right country with a sticky session looks like a regular advertiser. Different geos also let you check how your ads actually show up. See proxies for Facebook Ads and proxies for affiliate marketing.

Brand protection and review monitoring

Brand owners look for counterfeits, unauthorized use of their logo and partners breaking recommended prices, and they track reviews and mentions on review sites, maps and forums. Some websites show different content depending on the visitor's country, so it pays to check from local addresses. Residential IPs in 195 countries let you see a page the way shoppers in each region see it.

Website and localization testing

Developers and QA testers check how a website works for visitors from other countries: language, currency, prices, geo redirects, consent banners and content availability. A home address in the right country or city reproduces a real visit more accurately than a VPN or a server IP. For mobile versions and apps, mobile proxies are the easier choice.

Marketplaces

Use a sticky session for seller dashboards and rotation for one-off storefront checks in another region. The setups are covered on the marketplace proxies page.

Social media accounts and antidetect browsers

If you manage several Instagram or Facebook profiles, each one needs its own address. A sticky port from the 10000–20000 range paired with a separate antidetect profile keeps accounts from being linked by IP. More on the Instagram proxies page.

How to set up residential proxies in an antidetect browser or app

HTTP(S) and SOCKS5 are supported. You can authenticate with a username and password or via the IP whitelist: add up to 5 addresses per plan and skip the username and password entirely. One plan handles up to 1,000 concurrent connections, so a multithreaded scraper or a few dozen profiles can run side by side.

Your dashboard has a generator. Pick a country, protocol and line format, such as user:pass@host:port or host:port:user:pass, and download a ready-made .txt list. You can import it straight into your antidetect browser.

Step-by-step instructions live in the guides section. The most popular ones are AdsPower and Dolphin Anty, and there are also guides for Octo Browser, GoLogin, Multilogin, regular browsers, OS settings, Python, Puppeteer, Playwright and Scrapy. Once connected, check your address and WebRTC with the My IP tool and run your list through the Proxy Checker.

The honest limits of a residential pool

Residential proxies aren't magic, and it's better to know their limits up front.

  • The pool is shared. Another customer may have used an address before you. Pay-per-GB plans have no dedicated single-user IPs; for one, see static proxies. To filter out addresses that websites have already flagged as proxy or VPN, turn on the anonymity filter in your pool settings.
  • The IP in a sticky session can change early. A real device sits behind each address. If it goes offline, the port gets a new address in the same country.
  • UDP isn't supported. Messenger calls and online games won't work through the proxy. Mail ports are closed.
  • Some sites are off-limits for everyone. Government services, banks and payment systems are blocked. The full list is on the blocked sites page.

If your service checks addresses especially strictly, for example during account sign-up or warm-up, take a look at mobile proxies at $2.50 per GB. For fast collection of public data, datacenter proxies at $0.80 per GB will do the job.

Are these cheap residential proxies?

The price is $1.59 per GB with no monthly plan and no minimum package, and it stays the same at any volume, so small projects pay the same rate as large ones. That makes Prokso a cheap residential proxy option when your usage is uneven: you buy gigabytes once and they wait on the plan until you need them. What we do not sell is unlimited residential proxies: traffic is metered per GB, and a sticky session keeps one IP for up to 120 minutes. A fixed address for a week or a month is a separate product, static proxies.

Popular locations for rotating residential proxies are the USA, the UK, Germany, Ukraine and Kazakhstan; the country is chosen in the generator at no extra cost.

FAQ

How are residential proxies different from datacenter ones?

A residential address belongs to a home internet provider, so websites see a regular visitor. A datacenter address belongs to a server: it's faster and cheaper, but websites recognize and block it more often.

What are residential proxies used for?

Data collection and web scraping, market research, price and rank monitoring, ad verification in different countries, brand protection, and social media account work. The website sees a visitor from the chosen country or city and shows the same page local users get.

How much do residential proxies cost?

$1.59 per GB, the same price for any volume: no bundles, no subscription, you pay only for the gigabytes you need.

How much traffic does one social media account need?

Day-to-day work with one account usually takes 50–300 MB a month if you don't watch videos through the proxy. Start with a small amount and check the usage in your dashboard.

How do I keep the same IP (sticky session)?

In the generator choose “Sticky session”. Each port from 10000 to 20000 keeps its own address for up to 120 minutes. Use a different port for each account.

Why does city-level targeting use twice the traffic?

Our supplier bills precise-geo traffic (region, city, ZIP or ASN) at double the rate, so 1 GB of it takes 2 GB off your plan. We don't add anything on top. Country-only targeting costs nothing extra.

Can I get an IP that nobody else uses?

No. The residential pool is shared, and another customer may have used an address before you. To filter out IPs that websites have already flagged as proxy or VPN, turn on the anonymity filter in your pool settings.

Why did my IP change before the sticky session expired?

A real device sits behind every residential address. If it goes offline, the port gets a new address in the same country. For sensitive accounts, keep one port per profile and check your IP with My IP.

Do voice calls and online games work through residential proxies?

No. UDP isn't supported, so messenger calls and online games won't work. Mail ports are closed too. The full list of unavailable sites is on the blocked sites page.

How much do residential proxies cost?

$1.59 per GB, one price for any volume. There is no subscription: you pay for gigabytes, and unused traffic never expires. See the pricing page for all proxy types.

Do you offer unlimited or static residential proxies?

There is no unlimited plan: residential traffic is billed per GB. A fixed address is a separate product, static proxies: one IP for a week or a month. For a shorter hold, a sticky session keeps the same residential IP for up to 120 minutes.
