ERR_PROXY_CONNECTION_FAILED Error

What the error means

Chrome and Chromium-based browsers show this error when they cannot open a connection to the proxy set in the settings. Things never got as far as checking the username or reaching the site.

The cause is almost always on your side of the chain: a wrong address or port, the wrong protocol, or the network and security software not letting the connection out.

Causes

• A typo in the proxy address or port. An extra character, a space, mixed-up port digits.
• The wrong protocol is selected. The settings say HTTP while the port is for SOCKS5, or the other way round.
• An old proxy is left in the system. The browser uses the system settings, which hold an address that stopped working long ago.
• The network or security software blocks the connection. A corporate network, an antivirus or a firewall closes non-standard ports.
• No internet connection. Sites do not open without the proxy either.
• An extension or a VPN is interfering. Another proxy extension or an active VPN takes over the settings.

How to fix it

1. Check whether sites open without the proxy. If not, fix the internet connection first.
2. Compare the host and port with the line from the dashboard: 823 is HTTP, 824 is SOCKS5.
3. Make sure the protocol in the settings matches the port.
4. Turn off the VPN and other proxy extensions, then try again.
5. Look at the system proxy settings: remove old entries that you did not add.
6. Try another network, for example mobile internet. If everything works there, the port is closed in your network.
7. Set up the proxy again using the guide for your browser in the guides section.

How to check that it works

Paste the line into the proxy checker. If the proxy responds there, it is working, and the connection is failing from your network or browser.
