How to Turn Off a Proxy on Your Computer, Phone and Browser
Key takeaways
  • On Windows and macOS the proxy is turned off in the system network settings
  • On a phone the proxy is set separately for each Wi-Fi network
  • Chrome follows the system settings, Firefox keeps its own
  • If the proxy keeps coming back, look for an extension or app that sets it

People turn a proxy off for different reasons: the job is done, a site will not load, or some app set an unknown address without asking. The setting lives in a different place on each device, so let us go through them one by one.

Windows 10 and 11

  1. open Settings → Network & Internet → Proxy;
  2. under Manual proxy setup, switch off “Use a proxy server”;
  3. under Automatic proxy setup, switch off “Use setup script”;
  4. close the window — the change applies immediately.

Turning a proxy on is covered in the Windows guide — you turn it off in the same window.

macOS

  1. System Settings → Network;
  2. select the active connection (Wi-Fi or Ethernet) → Details → Proxies;
  3. switch off every toggle in the list and click OK.

Android

On Android a proxy is set for a specific Wi-Fi network. Open Settings → Wi-Fi, tap your network, choose Modify or the pencil icon, and set Proxy to None. For mobile data the proxy is set in the access point (APN) — the Proxy and Port fields there should be empty.

iPhone and iPad

Settings → Wi-Fi → the “i” icon next to the network → Configure Proxy → Off. As on Android, this setting is separate for each network.

Browsers

  • Chrome, Edge and Opera take the proxy from the system: turn it off in Windows or macOS and it is off in the browser too.
  • Firefox keeps its own settings: Settings → General → Network Settings → No proxy.
  • Extensions such as proxy switchers override everything else. Disable or remove them on the extensions page.

How to check the proxy is off

Open What is my IP: it should show your provider’s address and your country. If sites do not load after you turn the proxy off, restart the browser and check that no automatic setup script is still enabled.

If you use a paid proxy

Proxies in programs, not in the system

Some programs keep the proxy in their own settings and ignore the system ones. If the system is clean but a program still goes through a proxy, look for the setting inside it:

  • Telegram - Settings → Advanced → Connection type: choose Disable proxy.
  • Antidetect browsers - the proxy is set separately in each profile; remove it in the profile settings.
  • Scripts and the command line - check the HTTP_PROXY and HTTPS_PROXY environment variables and the settings of the library itself.

If the proxy turns itself back on

That means some program is setting it: a VPN client, a browser extension, a corporate policy or, in the worst case, malware. Look through the list of installed programs and extensions, remove any you do not recognize and scan your computer with an antivirus.

On a work computer the proxy is often set by the network administrator. In that case you should not turn it off yourself - ask why it is needed.

There is nothing to switch off in the dashboard: traffic is used only when an app actually sends requests through the proxy. Prokso bills per GB with no expiry, so the balance waits until you enter the connection line again. To set the proxy up again, use the guide for your device.

FAQ

How do I know a proxy is on?

Open a “What is my IP” page: if the address and country do not match your internet provider, your traffic is going through a proxy or a VPN.

Why does the internet stop working after I turn the proxy off?

Usually an automatic setup script or a browser extension is still enabled. Turn both off and restart the browser.

Do I need to switch anything off in the Prokso dashboard?

No. A proxy only works where you entered the connection line. Remove it from the app and the plan stops using traffic.

How do I turn off a proxy in Telegram?

Settings → Advanced → Connection type → Disable proxy. Telegram keeps the proxy in its own settings and does not use the system ones.

Why does the proxy turn back on after a restart?

A program is setting it: a VPN client, an extension, a company policy or malware. Find it and remove it, otherwise the setting will keep coming back.
