Rate limit

A rate limit is a request threshold after which a site temporarily stops responding to an address or account.

Websites protect themselves from overload: they count how many requests came from one address, account or key per unit of time. When the threshold is exceeded, the site replies with an error instead of a page.

Usually this is the 429 Too Many Requests code. Sites behind Cloudflare show error 1015. The limit is temporary and lifts by itself if you slow down.

Every site has its own threshold, and it is not published anywhere. A working pace is found by trial: start low and raise it while the responses stay stable.

Address rotation helps spread the load. What to do when you get the error is described on the 429 Too Many Requests page.

FAQ

How do I find out a site's limit?

Sites do not publish it. Start at a low pace and raise it while the responses stay stable. If there is an official API, the limits are given in its documentation.

Does changing the IP help?

If the limit is counted per address, yes. If it is counted per account or key, no; only slowing down helps.
