Proxy port

A proxy port is a number that, together with the host address, tells a program exactly where to connect to the proxy.

Updated · Prokso editorial team

A proxy line always contains a host and a port separated by a colon: gw.prokso.com:823. One server can run many ports, and each is responsible for its own protocol or mode.

Do not confuse the proxy port with the site's port. The first is where your program connects, the second is where the proxy goes next: 443 for HTTPS, 80 for HTTP.

In Prokso port 823 is HTTP and 824 is SOCKS5; both give a new IP on every request. Ports from 10000 to 20000 hold a sticky IP on each port and work for both HTTP and SOCKS5.

On the website side, ports 80, 443, 53, 853, 5228, 5060, 8080, 8090, 8443 and 8888 are open; mail ports are closed.

How to assign sticky IP ports to profiles

Each port from 10000 to 20000 holds its own address, so the simplest scheme is one port per profile: the first profile gets gw.prokso.com:10001, the second 10002, and so on. The holding time is set from 1 to 120 minutes, 30 by default. Two profiles on one port will get the same IP. The port number is not tied to a country: the username sets it, so port 10001 can be in Germany or in Poland.

For residential and mobile addresses, the IP on a port can change earlier if the device has left the network. The port stays the same and receives a new IP of the same country, so you do not need to change the profile settings.

How to check that the port is reachable

Some office and public networks allow outgoing connections only to ports 80 and 443. Then the proxy port does not respond, and programs report a timeout or a refused connection. Check this with nc -vz gw.prokso.com 823 on macOS or Linux, or Test-NetConnection gw.prokso.com -Port 823 in Windows PowerShell. If the command reports that the connection succeeded, the network does not block the port.

If the port is reachable but the proxy still does not work, check the full line in the proxy checker.

Port mistakes by symptom

SymptomLikely cause
The IP changes on every request, although you need one addressport 823 or 824 is set instead of 10000-20000
Two profiles show the same IPthey use the same port
The SOCKS5 connection is refusedHTTP port 823 is entered as SOCKS5 or the other way round

The last case is covered in detail on the SOCKS5 connection refused page.

FAQ

Why does the proxy not work on another port?

Each port is responsible for its own protocol or mode. If you enter SOCKS5 on the HTTP port, the connection will not be established.

Why so many ports for a sticky IP?

Each port holds its own address. A separate port for each account or profile gives each one its own IP.
