Proxy checker

A proxy checker is a tool that connects to a proxy and shows whether it works and which address a site sees.

Updated · Prokso editorial team

The checker opens a test address through the proxy. If the request goes through, it shows the protocol, the external IP, the country and the response time.

A check answers the question "does the proxy work", but not "will a particular site accept it". Each website has its own access rules.

If everything works in the checker but not in your program, the cause is in the program's settings: the line format, the protocol, the port. Response codes are explained on the proxy error codes page.

Prokso has a proxy checker, and you can see the address in your own browser on the My IP page.

What the Prokso checker accepts

The proxy checker handles up to 100 lines in one run, and the lines can be in any format: host:port:username:password, username:password@host:port or with a protocol at the start. You do not have to convert a list before checking it. Lines that failed are worth checking again separately, one at a time. It is handy to check a list downloaded from the generator in the dashboard right away: lines with a wrong format show up before you start the program.

How to read the result

The response time covers the whole path: from the checker to the gateway, from there to the exit address and on to the test site. For residential and mobile addresses one slow result is not a verdict, so repeat the check before drawing a conclusion.

On ports 823 and 824 a second check of the same line shows a different exit IP, and that is normal. On a sticky IP port the address should stay the same for the holding time, unless the device has left the network. If the country in the result does not match the username, check whether part of the username after __ got lost.

Checking from the command line

When you need a check inside a script or on a server, use curl. The command curl -s -o /dev/null -w "%{http_code} %{time_total}\n" -x http://LOGIN:PASSWORD@gw.prokso.com:823 https://example.com prints the site's response code and the total time in seconds. For SOCKS5, change the proxy address to socks5h://LOGIN:PASSWORD@gw.prokso.com:824.

If curl prints 000, there was no response from the site: the connection to the proxy or the tunnel failed. Add -v and look at the first lines of the output. Other options are described in the curl guide.

FAQ

Why does the checker show a different IP than the one in the line?

The line contains the gateway address, while the checker shows the exit address that the website sees. This is normal.

Can I check whether a proxy will be let into a specific site?

Only by opening the site itself through the proxy. Each website has its own access rules.
