Prokso MCP server in Cline

Cline, an agent for VS Code and other editors that also has a terminal version, works with remote MCP servers. Two things matter for Prokso: the streamableHttp type and a header with the API key.

1. What you need

  • The Cline extension in your editor or the Cline CLI. The Cline docs do not name a minimum version; update the extension if you do not see the MCP settings.
  • A Prokso API key. Create it in the dashboard under "Settings" → "API". The full key is shown only once.

What the server can do is on the Prokso MCP server page.

2. The cline_mcp_settings.json file

In the extension, click the MCP Servers icon in the top bar of Cline, open the Configure tab and, at the bottom, Configure MCP Servers. This opens cline_mcp_settings.json; in the Cline CLI it is ~/.cline/data/settings/cline_mcp_settings.json (the CLINE_MCP_SETTINGS_PATH variable sets another path). Add an entry under mcpServers:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "prokso": {
      "type": "streamableHttp",
      "url": "https://prokso.com/api/v1/mcp",
      "headers": {
        "Authorization": "Bearer YOUR_API_KEY"
      },
      "disabled": false,
      "autoApprove": []
    }
  }
}
  • "type": "streamableHttp" is required. Without this line Cline picks the legacy SSE transport, and our server works without SSE.
  • headers carries the key. The Remote Servers tab in the panel takes only a name, URL and transport, with no documented headers field, so add the Prokso server through JSON.
  • autoApprove lists tools the agent calls without asking. Our tools only read data, but get_plan and get_proxy_lines return proxy credentials, so decide for yourself.

3. How to check

  1. Save the file: prokso appears in the Cline server list.
  2. Expand the server: it should show five tools: get_account, get_prices, list_plans, get_plan, get_proxy_lines.
  3. Ask the agent: "Use prokso to show my balance" and approve the get_account call. If the server does not respond, restart it in the MCP settings.

4. Example prompts

  • "How much traffic is left on my plans?"
  • "Give me 5 SOCKS5 lines with sticky IPs in Poland for plan 12."
  • "Take 10 lines with a new IP on every request for plan 12 and put them into the PROXIES variable in .env."
  • "Compare the traffic left on all my plans and tell me which one has the least."

The tools only read data; buying is done in the dashboard or via the REST API. Ports and geo work as in the gateway reference; precise geo counts traffic double.

5. If it does not work

  • 401 means the key is wrong or revoked. Copy a new key and check that it comes right after Bearer and one space.
  • Errors about SSE or 405 mean the entry has no "type": "streamableHttp", so Cline talks to the server over the wrong transport.
  • 429 means more than 60 requests per minute with one key. Wait as many seconds as the Retry-After header says.
  • Long requests get cut off: you can raise the request timeout in the Cline MCP settings.

Check the key without the agent; the response should list five tools:

curl -X POST https://prokso.com/api/v1/mcp -H "Authorization: Bearer YOUR_API_KEY" -H "Content-Type: application/json" -d '{"jsonrpc":"2.0","id":1,"method":"tools/list"}'

Other codes are on the MCP server page.

6. Keeping the key safe

  • The cline_mcp_settings.json file lives in the Cline settings, not in the project. Do not copy it into a repository or share it: the key is in plain text.
  • Create a separate key for Cline (up to 5 per account), so you can revoke just that one when needed.
  • If the key may have leaked, revoke it under "Settings" → "API".

Proxy setup in apps is in Guides; if the lines from the agent do not work, use the step-by-step check.
